John Charlesworth
) | John Charlesworth was born Wolverhampton on the 17th September 1972. His interest in drawing became evident from an early age. His love of cartoons and caricatures in particular was a major source of inspiration during his childhood and his passion and single mindedness for drawing eventually paid off when he gained his first published drawing in a national newspaper at the age of sixteen. John continued to work on various personal projects through out his early twenties, but by the mid nineties his enthusiasm for cartoon art and Illustration began to wane as his influences began to draw ever more towards Graphic Design and Minimalism. It was during this period when John was introduced to the medium of Digital Based Artwork. This provided him with a whole new vehicle for his art and it is a medium that he has continued to work in to this present day.In recent years John has returned to his roots as an Illustrator. By incorporating the knowledge that he gained during his time as a Graphic Designer, John has developed a style of art, which combines a subtle blend of characterization and photo-realism. |
About the Artist
John’s influences derive from a fascination of concept and character sketches of animated films, and that of the Blue Note jazz album cover artwork of the mid fifties & sixties. By working in the medium of digitally enhanced artwork, He applies both aspects of illustration and graphic design in equal measure. With the additional use of vibrant colours and vivid characters, his artwork provides the general appearance of an animation cell. His work would be best described as being- Post-Modern-Disney.
Quote: - I have always maintained a strange ambivalence towards the artwork of Walt Disney. Although on one hand I am absorbed by the appearance and professionalism of their animation, on the other, I am slightly nauseated by its self-righteous undertone. Therefore it has long been my ambition to replicate the same high qualities of their animation into my artwork, in order that I may usurp that property for my own despicable means.
John holds great store by the aesthetics of a picture and always incorporates as much fluidity and energy into a composition as possible, in order to maximise it's visual impact. Although he tries to convey a narrative in most of his artwork, John retains a higher regard for the picture's actual appearance. He always feels if an image can generate a strong visual presence, it can create it's own narrative.
Education and biography
John Charlesworth studied graphic communication at the University of Wolverhampton and graduated with an honours degree in 1999. For a period of time he worked as a graphic designer, and became involved in all aspects of editorial and corporate design. He has created artwork for booklets and brochures, as well as creating designs for logos and corporate id's.
Since 2004 John has focused his talents upon his illustration artwork. Combining a subtle blend of graphic digital illustration, with aspects of traditional fine art.
