Great cover. I like the simplistic detail. The bright sun cathches the eye. Must be hard for the judges to make a decision. This cover makes an impression

posted by: Sandra Triegaardt | 13/05/2008

A little dated perhaps, but if you stripped off all colour save the red sun and beed it off the egdes it might work? A very young female demographic appeal. Nice line work in the background. I think it would have looked better without the outline of the book? It has a nice human feel though.

posted by: Carl | 05/05/2008

It is true that there seem to be a lot people with sour grapes commenting here. I think this design is striking, but not my favourite, it seems a bit out dated stylistically

Corto Maltese?

very good composition. you are the winner!

posted by: daniela | 01/05/2008

Marika's cover has warmth, balance and mistery. And YET- there is a very strong sense of playfulness! Those specticals are an irresistible focal point! She should win.

Wondering what Sean Dixon himself thinks about the quality of 20 books shortlist... This book was published last year in Canada under the title: The Girls Who Saw Everything ( Coach House Books) basing a lot to The Epic of Gilgamesh. Also: Lacuna: means ' empty space' or missing part in a manuscript etc, it might not mean same as Lagoon.

It makes me think of a sixties vacation to tropical asian islands.

Grace,I knew my cover can´t be accepted,so no way of jealousy,I saw many covers which,in my opinion, would make proud every publisher. Most of this covers are out of the list, that´s why I feel a little confused and disappointed...I know though Marika´s cover look appealing for some competitors,so good luck

posted by: Raluca | 30/04/2008

I dont' think it's jealousy. It's shock. At least in my case it is. I liked about 6 or seven covers a lot and I would have loved to see them on the shelves in my store. But this shortlist? I don't even want to promote this book anymore.

posted by: Jane Doe | 30/04/2008

maybe those who didn't get into the short list are a little jealous...? All the negative comments on the 20 shortlisters seem to prove this!!

posted by: Grace | 30/04/2008

Not for me either. If tribal would have been considered though an option for this cover I would have sorted out Guido Penzzolato´s orange -black composition which have a very harmonious style or Hugh Thomas...

posted by: Raluca | 30/04/2008

No!

Love this jacket - very iconic and exotic. Strong African feel almost.

posted by: anon | 30/04/2008

It is necessary time for the judges to retire!! How to choose these 20 book covers. Other participants were much better, certainly this competition is big one joke!

posted by: Amy | 30/04/2008

This novel is playful, but Marikas style is hurting my eyes.More suitable for a japanesse-travel short story I would say.

a cover like this will catch my eye - i'll pick it up ,page through and most likely buy the book!

posted by: annalie | 26/02/2008

Cool! But I wouldn't buy a book that looks like that - it doesn't go with my living room decor :-))
