To The Sea

To The Sea

The Lighhouse is a beacon of light and stability in times of turmoil.

Here the sign directs the way to the sea, the Atlantic Ocean is just out of sight, but never out of mind.

During their voyage, when Neil and Romy got a little bolder, they wou

I like the worn-out look - even the lighthouse seems to have stood the test of time; a trusted beacon. As constant as the stars and still on firm ground.

posted by: Dorin Yeow | 06/05/2008

This is such a cool picture!! I am still a bit sad that my own design did not make it to the final 20 though. Very very cool piece of design work anyway, well done, I hope yours wins

posted by: Miss G | 06/05/2008

Brilliant. As someone always influenced by the cover I know that this would catch my eye and make me pick it up. Love the atmosphere created by this design - makes me want to find out what its all about.

posted by: Christine | 06/05/2008

Full of imagery; love the colors..evoking, mysterious, dark, promising...would make me pick up the book to leaf thru.

posted by: hapizah | 06/05/2008

I want to read the book, tear off the front cover and give the rest of the book to my brother, then, trim and frame the cover and make a space on the stairway gallery and hang it among the images of my daughter as a child, maybe beside that drawing on glass of a bear that she bought for me on holiday in Poland in 1981 for 100 Zlotys.

posted by: Shane | 05/05/2008

At last, having inspected the list, I have found one I like! I am the target audience for this bbok, as I like Arcade Fire and The Royal Tenenbaums and the Flaming Lips. I WOULD stop to inspect this in the shop window for it's beautiful atmospheric colours - the lighthouse is a great motif for the story

posted by: Jane Dwyer | 05/05/2008

If the author is new to me then the first attraction will be the cover. This is a good cover and it would have caught my attention.

posted by: nurain | 05/05/2008

Joanne As a fellow saatchi onliner I noticed this design at the beginning of the copmetition. It's beautiful weathered vintage style is mysterious and earthy at once - congrats on making the shortlist. Your saatchi online page is full of gorgeous art, wow! - Scarlet

I work in the publishing industry myself. What caught my eye with this design is that it is one of the few in the shortlist in which one can clearly see the titles (lacuna cabal, sean dixon) when looking at even the smallest thumbnail. Many of the other works have such tiny titles and tehrefore do not work for me.... this is a strong contender!

posted by: Gordon Hanson | 05/05/2008

This is the cover that appealed to me most. Well done!

posted by: Nigel Hunter | 05/05/2008

My hands would immediatly pick this book up off the shelf, as the cover makes you want to look inside and discover what the real story is that lies behind that intriguing glimpse of the tale. This cover grabs your attention, has interest, and creates a desire to look further.

posted by: Carol Hunter | 05/05/2008

The author is new to me, but this cover is so intriguing, it would fairly beg to leap off the shelf into my hands! It is obviously the work of an imaginative artist, who gets my vote for originality, colour and design. With this cover, the book is sure to be a winner!

posted by: Barbara Thorpe | 05/05/2008

This cover is both artistically and cleverly constructed of fact and fantasy and immediately draws me into an adventure. A lot of thought has gone into this work which I feel would appeal to both male and female readers.

posted by: A. Bell | 05/05/2008

Not bad!

This suits the islanders.

posted by: Santos | 04/05/2008

This is the one for me. Evocative and appealing at first and all subsequent sights. I would pick up the book for the cover alone.

posted by: Dave Coleman | 04/05/2008

As a book addict and a total Philistine I buy all my books by the cover, this I would purchase in a minute. I hope the story is as good as the co ver!

posted by: Janet Creelman | 04/05/2008

This cover reminded me a lot of a book with promise in the reading, something to spend time with, of surprise, of detail, of adventure and perhaps even a happily wasted afternoon between me and the story.

posted by: Carole McKenzie | 04/05/2008

I loved the complexity of this design and as an avid reader it is the cover which makes me pick up a new author/to me/. I would definately have reviewed this book. Clever art work, I suspect a clever artist.

posted by: Tricia Irving | 04/05/2008

Like this one a lot - it has a dream-like quality but still manages to point the way to the story. A very effective cover.

posted by: John Coleman | 04/05/2008

Top work...very atmospheric..My choice for winner!

posted by: Willettsio | 04/05/2008

An apt and elegant interpretation!

posted by: Peter Blyth | 04/05/2008

Like a beautiful dream - the colour is awesome - can i buy this as art too?

posted by: Vamori | 04/05/2008

My winner!! The colours are beautiful and I would have to pick this up to see what it is about, and would be happy to be seen reading this on the train or in a cafe. This cover has appeal to both sexes and this willsurely encourage the greatest number of readers to buy it. And in response to the comment by WH, my partner says she loves the vintage styling of the cover and would love to "touch the earthy looking cover" Joanne Bradford - I hope you win with this, you should do!!

posted by: John Morris | 04/05/2008

Wondering what Sean Dixon himself thinks about the quality of 20 books shortlist... This book was published last year in Canada under the title: The Girls Who Saw Everything ( Coach House Books) basing a lot to The Epic of Gilgamesh. Also: Lacuna: means ' empty space' or missing part in a manuscript etc, it might not mean same as Lagoon.

Is the''lighthouse'' of this list,I would buy you without hesitation, hope you win

Too mysterious for this book. Do ladies like to touch the earthy looking cover? Great for the old X-files episodes.

It is necessary time for the judges to retire!! How to choose these 20 book covers. Other participants were much better, certainly this competition is big one joke!

I like this one, have a realistic-fairy atmosphere, would make me take a look inside.Book lovers are people who enjoy relaxing moments for a ''fantastic journey'',this one have the ingredients.

posted by: speechless | 30/04/2008

good work but doesnt leave ones phantasie much space - it boxes the viewer into the designer mind - the cover is for book to animate buyers and not for a film with given pictures

posted by: dora | 30/04/2008

posted by: Melissa Parker | 31/03/2008

I love lighthouses - so this one appeals to me. Good attention to the brief here. And great use of colour

posted by: Charles Himself | 28/03/2008

I llike the fonts on this one - and the white is nice and clean on the rich turquoise - this is a strong contender I think

posted by: hugh thomas | 28/03/2008

Not bad. But you should have sticked to one font for the title and the author. The font for Sean Dixon is not a good choice.

posted by: Jane Doe | 26/03/2008

I think this would appeal to both sexes as my husband loves this design and so do I. A really appealing picture.

posted by: marieke esterhuizen | 24/03/2008

nice to see someone taking this seriously and ACTUALLY reading the brief

posted by: anon book lover | 23/03/2008

I agree, good references to the ocean and the consteallation Taurus - I would definitley pick this up to investigate in a book shop - lovely colors too

posted by: Helen Kvist | 23/03/2008

This fits the excerpt from the book perfectly... "They got a little bolder after that. They came up at night to lie on the deck hidden behind the higher decks and look up at the stars....... Neil pointed up. ‘See that up there?’ he said. ‘Yes,’ said Romy, though she wasn’t sure. ‘That’s the constellation Taurus,’ he said. ‘That’s the real Bull of Heaven.’...." Great job - a favourite
