i really like this cover. it has a lot of visual depth, and a fair amount of psychological depth also. i like the way in which the opaque layer in front is united with the background through the lighting of the sun. this gives a connection both visual and psychological. good composition, excellent typography. so don't worry kathrin about the criticism: if you make something really good, then it often isn't mainstream and many people just won't see it.

Fantastic.

I meant "white" text.

A little damp. I know the novel sounds sad, but people like depth in their sad, and something unexpected. I think the red text would look better while.

I find this too cold - I asked my partner what she thinks but she likes it less.

Thank you Kathrin.

I love this cover. Evocative, intriguing .... all the things a good book cover should be. I don't understand the negative comments at all.

posted by: RC | 03/05/2008

wow - see how inspiring this is? makes you think of UFOs of all things. when i made this i thought about a sea journey to uncertain coasts, about nevigation with the help of stars, about ancient myths and most of all about the impact of books on our imagination. but i don't think you are really interested in that.

posted by: kathrin | 03/05/2008

kathrin tell me were you thinking of UFO during your creativity? UFOlogy is hip.

i am well aware of the meaning of the word "lacuna" - thx a lot. don't you have the feeling that something is missing when you look at this picture? when i read the brief the book did not seem too joyful/playful to me. and i did not know that it has been published already. i don't like the tone of most comments here - criticism is fine but the tone ....

Wondering what Sean Dixon himself thinks about the quality of 20 books shortlist... This book was published last year in Canada under the title: The Girls Who Saw Everything ( Coach House Books) basing a lot to The Epic of Gilgamesh. Also: Lacuna: means ' empty space' or missing part in a manuscript etc, it might not mean same as Lagoon.

Un-easiness, as if I have not cleaned my glasses.

posted by: WH | 01/05/2008

I must say I like this cover, but is not for our playful book. For a classical story will be just perfect.S.Dixon´s novel is not a classical one...

Hello Harper? This cover does not stand out!

posted by: Jane Doe | 30/04/2008

Not such a fan. Vaguely thriller like but way too uninteresting. Would get lost on a shelf I reckon.

It is necessary time for the judges to retire!! How to choose these 20 book covers. Other participants were much better, certainly this competition is big one joke!
