Thanks anonymous, I believe at the moment only one original work comes to my mind and that is Revital Falke.

Hugh, could you also send your shortlist.

posted by: anonymous | 06/05/2008

Raluca can you share your shortlist, you have been an active commentor for the past few months. regards.

Best wishes to all twenty artists on the short list. critics are part of growing, but congrats to all who made it to the next level.

My ''veryshortlist'' of the shortlist:Jo Kerlogue-for her(his?) cool urban up-to-date illo, which hopefully will atract also teens in the bookstores;Joanne Bradford for her profesional and promising cover;Becca Thorne for cunning simplicity and ,well,Beverly Braun because I developed a certain atraction for her clown:))).I love the loneliness of thouse 2 silhouettes lost in the muddy grey desert of Teresa's photo, but I agree with the others is not really for our book and I also like the colours and the iconic personage of Biesalski Kay,but not the composition on the whole;the 2 covers which portray the group as the brief insisted, are not really for me.Even if I´m still lost in translation with this short list as my favourites are not within,I congratulate once again the finalists, may the best of you win:),I´ll buy the book anyway,no mather if the cover is or is not to my liking.

I am the target audience for this book, as I like Arcade Fire and The Royal Tenenbaums and the Flaming Lips. I would not choose this as it is sacry and a bit weird, how does it fit with the story exactly?

posted by: Jane Dwyer | 05/05/2008

A bit too melancholy. Increasng the colour intensity would work on this image. It's trying for that old world rustic, gypsy story-telling look but that doesn't sound like the novel-which is still pretty contemporary. And the children and the cloud I don't get??

posted by: Carl | 05/05/2008

This has been a complete joke.I thought it was for the over eighteens.

posted by: Jenny | 03/05/2008

We can not go wrong based on the original cover. Down to the first ten tabs oK now we got 17 lets just jump by luck to the tabs at the end and pick few. Done. Where should we go for lunch - 3 hour of debates later.......

posted by: Judges | 03/05/2008

Check it out. Its the same people that cause all the friction in all of the other venues.

posted by: B.Braun | 02/05/2008

i really don't get it - suddenly all these spiteful comments. i was absolutely unexpectedly chosen as one of the 20 and am still dumbfounded. but what really makes me sad is the hatred of those that are disappointed. if you don't like these covers - fine, say so, but you should focus your criticism on art-related aspects, please. i think everyone here tried their best and it is just unfair to thrash them just because they were more successful. just my humble opinion.

Now we know why most Harper Collins' books look so ugly.

posted by: hugh thomas | 02/05/2008

plese not that they are not chooing the best, but the one they like. and because they pay 1,000, so that they can play you.

mr. saatchi and mr. harper, you think we all are blind!!!

posted by: kilo | 02/05/2008

I´m speechless about this shortlist. Who did this selection? Where are all the great designs I have seen?

posted by: kp | 02/05/2008

Juss, Nice finding the previous book cover looked like a vintage cigar box with an old enlarged tax label. Maybe it did not grab the audiences????

Does anyone know when they decide on the winning book cover??

'The Last Days of the Lacuna Cabal' was last year published in Canada with title 'The Girls Who Saw Everything' (Coach House Books). Is this cover what Sean Dixon would want to image his story?

posted by: jussi | 01/05/2008

Hello, May 1st, 2008 date via regulation the jury announces us the list of the artists retained for finale. I'm amazed that artists don't appear in this list as: Mary Harman,Bon Dewie,Trichereau Antoine, Evi Vennou,Bilge Bayraktar,Daniel Poisson,Guido Pezzalato,Marisa Swangha,Wolfgang Haghani,Jon Saraiu,Christophe Grimonpon, Morokoth Fournier Des Corats,Suzy Margolius,Jilly Tinniswood,Gabriela Lehner,Ricardo Donoso-Cortes, Ali Goodyear... But as any experience, it's necessary to see the positive, and with this competition, I had the pleasure to get acquainted with artists and their universe such as Moshe Abeles, Morokoth Fournier Des Corats, Ricardo Donoso-Cortes. And bravo to Raluca Costache for his courage defending its work. Good luck to everybody. http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/yourgallery/artist_profile/Sam+Otablo/68153.html

Not for this book, otherwise well done if the colors were more vibrant and inviting. The audiences need to be more mature to give some weigh to the story behind the cover.

Are we from so different worlds?Beside this one(which sudenlly look more appealing now in this so select and subtile list!)I have just another 2 I like and more than 30 great outside!I try to be objective but still for more than15 works on this list I do not get it!With such a big competition is dificult to make everybody happy but guys, now really you play out your own reputation.Did I miss something?

posted by: Gustav | 30/04/2008

It is the list of the pupils of a class of one of the children of the judges, that's it, you have a lot of humor mrs & mr judges, at the moment we wish the true list.

Weeks of competition for this list, no, I don't believe it

posted by: Linda.S | 30/04/2008

Dear judges, why you have if fear of electing talented artists, this list is the worst, the one who was in the garbage can, reassure we.

posted by: Ricci | 30/04/2008

The 6 foots clown-god in the top of the list is a metaphoric message for the closing competition:)))).At least you got the title right and old carnavalesque atmosphere is better than no atmosphere at all...

posted by: Raluca C | 30/04/2008

Jane doe, anon, Richard etc. Have made, several times, artists begin again to begin again because the title was illegible or incorrect. E we see, in 20 first place Aylwin Masih, big joke!!

It is necessary time for the judges to retire!! How to choose these 20 book covers. Other participants were much better, certainly this competition is big one joke!

posted by: Amy | 30/04/2008

I did not really noticed your cover before, but now, among the others, make more sense.''Cirque du Soleil'' style is subtile and dreammy;size and title are correct. You have my vote!
