Utterly diverse reaction ..just goes to show ..one man's meat etc.... one panels winner,..another panels loser.- It's all totally subjective, ..not a question of merit at all.. I can see why some people are unhappy at panels choice , but you would have some unhappy people, whichever entry had won. You don't have to be the best...just the luckiest.

posted by: confusedartist | 14/07/2008

It is a very nice piece of art work but, upon accidentally stumbling across this I must say that the thought crossed my mind that some one had copied anothers work. The rolling sea being one of the main aspects and also the color scheme but hey...I am sure the other artist will not mind :)

posted by: Chkn | 06/07/2008

I saw a post here that goes "seen better from a five year old to be honest." WHO SAYS A 5 YEAR OLD CANT MAKE GOOD ART. AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE GOT THIS 5 YEAR OLD TO COMPETE.

posted by: abe | 13/06/2008

Almost every work of art in todays context is influenced or appropriated from so many histories, people, collaborations, movements. To attack this particular piece for lack of originality is quite childish. Every entry that I have seen here has its origins somewhere in the past. Art is not a competition in its true sense, but since resources are limited we choose to compete. So learn to move on. I liked the work. Congratulations Becca.

A Safe Cover -- Is this really meant to be a selling point for cutting-edge literature. I'd think about it Sean Dixon. Does one really want to blend in with the blandness that is already there...focus groups...and safe marketing. Edgy ...I think not!

I meant over all a true artist.

posted by: W Haghani | 29/05/2008

Well Marty through out the contest you have been the moral supporter of everyone. You are to the other extreme. I believe the point here was too similar, and this brings the art work into a gray area. The brief called for somehing "original". I am personnaly happy that a real artist has won. But I have seen some real original art works that were horrible (mine could be one of them) and also some that were actualy good originals and inspiring. But, nevertheless, congrats to Becca who is an artist over all.

posted by: Wolfgang Haghani | 29/05/2008

I looked at the eraserhead album cover. How silly it doesn't look like this cover at all other than being in black and white with a red title and having some wave forms. Why not be delighted that this cover was a winner? Instead of accusing the designer of copying someone else?

posted by: kathleen sheer | 28/05/2008

it's very nice but there's no saily boats in the extracts, they're all surely ferries and big boats so it's not really true to the story is it?

posted by: andy waite | 27/05/2008

Stanley Donwood's "Cnut" is clearly a different work then this. His lines are masculine and his waves fold with more tension due to the sharper angles and pointed focused points adjacent to the figure. This work on the other hand has a more innocent and feminine feel -- your eyes are drawn toward the boat and then the sun causing you to feel the brownian motion which the waves create. As such Becca's work reflects a more subtle and softer "coming of age theme" making it quite different from "Cnut". Clearly both pieces are unique and each more suited to its application. this says more about the judges than anything else -Becca was probably the last person who thought she would win and good luck to her and I hope she enjoys the cash but I do not think Sean Dixons book will be noticed on the shelves.

Very original for a design dated 2 years, coming from a publishing house such as that - this it is normal. For the more creative artists during this competition, do not worry you have your luck in 2 years

It's good. It is original and it does exatly what it's supposed to do which is make me want to read the book. Visual artists seem to be very bitter judging by some of these comments.

The Judges can argue that these are sand dunes and the camels pulling the jet engine sailing boat through the Iraqis desert can not be observed since they are behind that one big sand dune. Or the boat is symbolic creative approach to a mirage representing water.

Wow this work is now so controversial people have resorted to counting the lines in it to compare it with another artists! Brilliant. Nothing like a bit of a squabble over some art! Come on people, how stupid do you think Becca is? Do you really think she'd conciously copy someone elses work and enter it into a high-profile, international competition? You'll probably say yes now won't you? Says something about you lot I think...

posted by: sensationalist | 15/05/2008

Still, it is not an original work as the brief was looking for. That might be spliting hairs. But the similarities are more than just coincidents, each wave has approx. the same number of lines, colors etc. I hope Becca stands as the winner, but in reality I like the work because it reminds me of a better designer, not Becca. And I like this one much more of some other ones from the short list.

posted by: A reader | 15/05/2008

It's only plagiarism if you use the exact same image (or whatever) and pass it off as your own. This design is only similar. By these idiots thinking, anyone who paints in a similar style to Rembrant is plagiarising his work! artists are always taking inspiration from one another, and often several people develop the same style at the same time (the impressionists, the pre-raphaelites, the cubists- need i go on?) Give it a rest you sore losers! This artist may have developed her style before Stanley Donwood- who knows! Well done Becca this is great =)

I think your cover stand out pretty well(and is a ''shining star'' in compare with the first one, sorry to say). Was a big surprise to see the change and even more,to see that this time the judges feel the need to adress few words to the world and winner:))A minimum sense of etiquette is telling me that in ocasions like this, they should have done it from the begining(with the other winner as well)......Well,shall we expect another rabbit from the hat?Hope this cover will stay the winner. The sursprises are pooring here like river:someone should write a book about, can be really a hot subject!!Congrats Becca, once again!

I hate commenting on things but some people have been so unnecessarily rude about your work! (and others too) It's clearly contemporary and would certainly be eye catching in the shops. You obviously have a flair for design and i do like the way you printed the text the same as the image. Congratulations Becca, you deserve it for putting up with these Luddites.

posted by: a polite person | 14/05/2008

wow, i can't believe people are comparing this to the eraser! just using the same colors is no ground for plagiarism surely?! As I recall the eraser was darker and a lot more graphic than this one- they are both linoprints of water though, so i guess they would be pretty similar. I like it- sorry about the rude people. T.

I still like the concept of the competition, as long it does not hurt the pockets of the professional designers. There is a lot to be learned. But Saatchi is at something good.

posted by: WH | 14/05/2008

Lets not all forget that the competitors had also the responsibility of letting the selectors and the judges know if they have not followed the rules prior to any so called final judgment. I am not saying this to give some slack on the expert selectors or judges.

posted by: DH | 13/05/2008

Funny, Yes, it is very similar to the waves on the album, even the same color is used for the sun as is used on the albums label.

posted by: Diane Gibbs | 13/05/2008

Congratulations Becca. The fact that your work was chosen for the cover by a panel of judges who looked through many entries is even more important than the monetary award. For me it seems that there is a subtle and organically feminine nature in your water textures and the target textures. It would have also have been interesting to read some comments from the jurists regarding what they felt when selecting your work. It is always best when jurists tell artists what worked for them.

posted by: S.M.Lewis | 13/05/2008

I'm so pleased this one is the winner

posted by: Grace | 12/05/2008

It would have been nice if the third and fourth would have been also announced. As long as a design is very strong I do not believe any artists would have complained about breaking rules. We break them on a daily basis at work.

posted by: kuriouce | 12/05/2008

its a nice cover...congratulations . But the terms of competition were somehow not very clear expressed. Therefor some posted more than one design in the beginning of the competition, and had no chance to delate it /or some later (The later by saatchi posted e-mail address for to correct writing-errors didn't answer... ), when they recognized, that that isn' t allowed........But its not to change, only wanted to mention it.

I agree - the excerpts mentioned boats, but not sail boats - a silly mistake - the boat should be the type discussed in the book - the idea is to illustrate the book inside, n'est pas?
