The IMPACT: Ohh my my.

posted by: hugh thomas | 23/05/2008

The ESSENCE of the book : 1. No customers ever rule 2. What judges say goes.

posted by: hugh thomas | 23/05/2008

Jo must have just turned eighteen.

posted by: HPD | 23/05/2008

Just quoting: The winning design will get across the ESSENCE of the book to a POTENTIAL READER, using CREATIVE and INNOVATIVE DESIGN to help the book make an IMPACT on the shelves. The book is completely ORIGINAL so we are looking for a cover that will MIRROR THAT ORIGINALITY. ...?????

Wait just one minute you choose this one first. This was the one heavy miss.

"M" why do not you use your real full name? even when commenting in a positive way? that says alot.

posted by: anonymous | 12/05/2008

really?????????

posted by: disgruntled losing competitor | 11/05/2008

Respond to M, I own three books that their successful jackets were shown as an example but I can assure you I will not be caught in public or at work with a book cover such this. For the reason it does not have the smart or enticing look.

posted by: Linda Geddes | 11/05/2008

I am glad that I am living in America and I will not cross this cover in a book store.

posted by: Andrew Eaton | 11/05/2008

gives nothing of the flavour of the book or anything very much at all

posted by: andy waite | 10/05/2008

This cover would not grab my attention in a bookshop, it's pretty bland and uninteresting. Oh well, no accounting for taste!

posted by: splodge | 10/05/2008

It was the first time I participated to such a contest and I never thought I would win. This was an opportunity to try my hand at the same time as other artists and I have seen some VERY good covers here! But the result is indeed very modest, to say the least! And for the other people that worked hard and tried to produce something really good the choice of the winning cover is really a bad joke...What is to be learned in this case? Stay away from other competitions presented here! Shame!

posted by: virgil mlesnita | 10/05/2008

Bad is bad and bottom line is that this is bad, sloppy.

posted by: Dorothy Chandler | 10/05/2008

This cover could have been alright only if the novel was very well known, however since even the title of he novel has been changed since the first publication in Canada, says that it is not known by all and this cover does not promise a Gilgamesh kind of re-actment or adventure - no depth to it, it says first novel by a high school kid.

posted by: Audience | 10/05/2008

Bad illustrations by artists.

posted by: unbeknown | 10/05/2008

Well, congrats to the winner! I just knew they put those examples of other successful jacket covers in the brief for a reason. This has the same look or feel, but is different enough not to be mistaken for the same thing. I'm not sure why this folk-arty or "non-sophisticated" style is considered appropriate for this group, since they were reported as being smart. But Jo, the winner was astute enough to pick up on the right signals.

posted by: M | 10/05/2008

I'm sorry I just don't lie this cover. there were some really eyecatching covers done in the hundreds of entries but this one looks tacky. If all one needed to win was a ballpoint pen and a black marker I think the majority of us would have not spent hours working on covers. I agree I would not buy a book with this cheesy cover.

posted by: Marty | 09/05/2008

Each artist may have a chance but it is not tell WHEN?? The right person at the right moment is the secret. I did not win, I did not sell but who knows when someone will like portraits made of pastels which is definitively NOT up to date. Congrats because at your place whatever the taste of my viewers might be I should hope to receive that word!

posted by: SAGLIER-GALLICHER | 09/05/2008

It is awful. I thought, that more professional work will win.

I am not an artist, but it looks like a high school project. Even Picasso did not earn at this rate. Congrats Jo you have the record and should be proud of it

posted by: daniela | 08/05/2008

i don't think this is a good work and i feel so disappointed to the judges to choose these 20 cover.

posted by: fili | 08/05/2008

We artists line up to get abused. The prize money equals one tenth of what a publisher should pay for a cover.

posted by: Pissed Upon | 08/05/2008

Congrats!!!!! This cover sucks! Not to be bitter, because i did not win.. But this suck! Sean dixon you got bad taste!

posted by: ooooo | 08/05/2008

The LOCA is appropriate because it is a kind of crazy book club, and its memebers do crazy things and their characters are crazy. However I will need to ask jo to move the name to the left. The creator of course as we all know is never LOCA.

Really........what did you others expect from a Saatchi competition? talent doesn't come into it.That must be the quickest £1.000 that Jo's earned in his/her life and always will be.

posted by: Ewan Huzarmi | 07/05/2008

It still reads "LOCA Sean Dixon). The surface needs touches, one option is to use "Neon Glow" on a photoshop to make the effect deemer.

Who knows which one is Revital Falke?

posted by: anonymous | 07/05/2008

Why does this Amy person copy and paste the same lame comment on every shortlisted entry? (get a life) Unless one has read the book, which I have not, then how could one possibly know which cover is the most appropriate? This is not my favorite either, but perhaps it conveys the feel of the book better than the others?

posted by: eugene | 07/05/2008

Is indeed a completly ''loca'' cover, congratulations LOL

posted by: Raluca | 07/05/2008

We all artists would like to give thanks to all jusdges exclusive tastes by donating to each a hand made plasticine of self image by Revital Falke. Cheers.

CONGRATULATIONS! Wonderful solution for the book. I did not understand the nature of the story. The cover conveys. Good luck I hope you all make big money. P.S. I hope Jo is getting more than the prize. The publisher is getting off cheap.

I like it, but the fill lines on the black letters are distracting. Keep in mind this is for a published book, so cleanliness is key. That said, I like the hand lettering.
