Education - Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
A visit to the Stedelijk Museum, with the presentations from its own collections and changing exhibitions, is not just a voyage of discovery through the recent past but also a confrontation
with the present and future. The Stedelijk seeks to make the past live, but at the same time to provide space for artists who are shaping new content in new ways. The Museum is a place where the public comes in contact with these self-determined visions and expressions, and where you are challenged to look intensively and compare.
The Stedelijk does not only stimulate and inspire; it is also a study centre and knowledge bank where information can be obtained. Education and information provision are parts of this.
The Museum is developing activities and educational materials for the wide and diverse audience that visits it. The materials are
intended both for individual visitors and educational
institutions.
An important point of departure for education is that it be centred around the artwork, and that in direct confrontation with concrete objects the visitor is invited to look at the work intensively. In addition, aspects of the artworks can be considered, opened to discussion or serve as the basis for further study. Artworks can be compared with one another, but
sometimes themes are also used.
A number of groups (including school groups) are presently being supported in looking at art:
* Amsterdam pupils from the upper classes in primary schools are involved in Kunstkijkuren (Art viewing hours).
* There is presently a cooperative pilot project under way for secondary vocational pupils. In order to kindle enthusiasm for the museum among these students, arrangements have been conceived
that make distinctions between the first years and final years of secondary education. In putting together these arrangements, the four courses of study in these schools have been taken into
account.
* Guides for use in Culture and Art Education courses are regularly produced for presentations from the collection and changing exhibitions. There are also special guided tours tailor-made for students from these classes. The Stedelijk accepts the activity passes from this programme for entrance to the Museum.
* For more information about guided tours see Guided tours.
* Information about the work of famous artists in the Stedelijk's collection is provided in 'At Second Sight' pamphlets. There are English versions of the following brochures: Beckmann, Cezanne,
Cucchi, Dubuffet, Fontana, Kienholz, De Kooning, Matisse, Mondriaan, Newmann, Picasso, Rauschenberg, Ryman, Serra and Tapies.
* Moreover, there are regularly educational videos being made in connection with exhibitions and the collection.
