Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new building
17.04.07
Preparations for the new building of the Stedelijk Museum were marked by a Japanese Groundbreaking Ceremony on Thursday, April 12, 2007.
Together with the City of Amsterdam and the Japanese firm Teijin Limited (one of the most important Founders for the new extension), the Stedelijk Museum performed the accompanying symbolic ceremonial actions on the Museumplein.
With this traditional Japanese Shinto rite, by breaking open the ground Carolien Gehrels, Amsterdam’s alderwoman for Art and Culture, Mr Nagashima, president and CEO of Teijin Limited, and Gijs van Tuyl, director of the Stedelijk Museum, petitioned the gods for the safety of all those involved during the construction work. This symbolic act was also intended to solicit good fortune for the whole project, including success for the museum after its opening in 2009.
The festive event marked the start of this important project for the cultural heritage of the City of Amsterdam.
The Groundbreaking Ceremony itself was performed by Mr. Nagashima, Carolien Gehrels, Gijs van Tuyl, Herman van Vliet (delegated by the City to represent it in the construction of the new Stedelijk Museum) and Joop Leliveld (director of Midreth, the contractor), preceded by an address by Mr. Komachi, Japan’s ambassador to The Netherlands. After the official ceremonies, Mr. Nagashima offered a toast with sake, after which sushi was served.
On May 1 the site will be turned over to the contractor, Midreth, and the building process will commence. It is expected that the first piles will be driven after the summer.
