The best of the museum’s collection of more than 260,000 pieces of art are on view throughout the year—thousands of masterpieces covering 5,000 years of human creativity, cultures from around the world, and a variety of materials. Whether you have 20 minutes or the whole day to spare, there’s a world of art to be enjoyed at the Art Institute. The Art Institute is most famous worldwide for our French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collections. The Pritzker Galleries 201-206––six rooms for paintings and sculpture, and five adjacent corridor galleries for works on paper—are located at the top of the Grand Staircase, leading to the right. Visitors should not miss iconic paintings such as Gustave Caillebotte’s Paris Street, Rainy Day and Georges Seurat’s A Sunday on ‘La Grande Jatte’—1884. Surrounding the sunlit Grand Staircase are fragments of some of Chicago’s most beautiful buildings, part of one of the leading architectural collections in any museum. Two of the most famous paintings in American history––Grant Wood’s American Gothic, and Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, are in the newly reinstalled American Art galleries in Rice Building. Visitors should also check out the Bergman Galleries of Surrealist Art, one of the premier Surrealist collections in the world, including the Joseph Cornell boxes. One of the most comprehensive collections in the world of modern and contemporary art, from early Picassos and Kandinskys and Brancusis to the largest concentration of the work of contemporary German artist Gerhard Richter is on view year-round.
