Permanent Collection - Museum of Contemporary Art

The depth and coherence of MOCA’s permanent collection is due in great measure to its being a “collection of collections,” of which key acquisitions and gifts from several major collectors have formed the cornerstone. Just a partial list would include the following, among others. The 1984 Panza Collection purchase encompasses 80 seminal works of abstract expressionism and pop art. The Barry Lowen Collection, bequeathed in 1986, includes 67 works of minimalist, post-minimalist, and neo-expressionist painting, sculpture, photography, and drawing. The museum’s holdings gained greater depth and context with the 1989 bequest of The Rita and Taft Schreiber Collection, a gift of 18 master paintings, sculptures, and drawings dating from 1939 to 1972. The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Photography Collection—a 1995 purchase of 2,300 documentary pictures—contributed immeasurably to MOCA’s photography holdings. The 1996 bequest of Marcia Simon Weisman brought the museum 83 exquisite prints and drawings, along with a works-on-paper study center. Lannan Foundation made an extraordinary donation in 1997 of 114 works representing 53 artists, a gift that significantly increased MOCA’s holdings of works by several major Southern California artists. Most recently, the museum was the recipient of its largest gift from a private collector with the 2005 donation by MOCA Trustee Blake Byrne of 123 works representing 78 artists. The museum has also received numerous artworks directly from the artists who made them. In addition to these major collections, the museum is also distinguished by the exceptional number of gifts received directly from artists—works given by the artists who made them, as well as gifts of work made by one artist and given by another.
