Permanent Collection - Museo Nacional del Prado
The Museo Nacional del Prado is without doubt the only institution able to present through its collection the entire history of Spanish painting, from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. Outstanding masterpieces by artists such as Bermejo, Berruguete, Sánchez Coello, El Greco, Ribalta, Ribera, Zurbarán, Murillo, Velázquez, Goya, Vicente López, the Madrazo family, Rosales and Sorolla form an unparalleled ensemble of international renown. In fact, the study of almost any Spanish painter and his work is almost impossible without visiting the numerous galleries of the Museo Nacional del Prado.
The Italian School is another high point of the Museum’s collection, with fifteenth century masterpieces such as The Annunciation by Fra Angelico, The Death of the Virgin by Mantegna, and the Dead Christ supported by Angels by Antonello de Messina. Due to the taste of sixteenth century monarchs, the collection shows a bias towards Venetian art and the work of Titian in particular. This artist is represented in the Prado by 36 paintings, the largest collection anywhere of his works, while there are also major examples of the art of Tintoretto and Veronese. The Tuscan-Roman Renaissance of the sixteenth century finds its maximum exponent in Raphael, with an unparalleled group of works, among them the Portrait of a Cardinal, two paintings of The Holy Family, and the Virgin of the Rose. Also outstanding are works by Andrea del Sarto, Correggio, Caravaggio, Gentileschi, Annibale Carracci, Reni, Furini, Lanfranco, Domenichino, Luca Giordano and the Tiepolos.
In addition, the Museo Nacional del Prado has a remarkable holding of Netherlandish works, including masterpieces such as The Descent from the Cross by Rogier van der Weyden, The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch, four of the 19 known works by Joachim Patinir and an extraordinary group of portraits by Antonio Moro. With regard to seventeenth century Flemish painting, the Museum has the largest collection of works by Rubens in existence: a total of 80 paintings.
It should also be noted that the Museum has fine examples of Dutch, French and English painting, as well as an important holding of classical sculptures, coins, drawings, prints and the decorative arts.
