The Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts is a museum of modern and contemporary fine art. It exists to collect, preserve, present, and interpret the best of contemporary and modern art for the purpose of enriching people's lives through aesthetic and learning experience.
The opening of the first fine art exhibition in the premises of the former town hall in Slovenj Gradec was held in 1956, but the Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts was not officially established until 1957. In 1975, the gallery premises expanded to its present-day extent (some 1000 square metres of exhibition space). Thus the gallery attained the potential for serious museum work and presentation of collections acquired as a result of the gallery’s exhibitory policy, donations and purchases.
The story of the gallery and its collections has been closely associated with painter Karel Pečko. He was among the initiators for the founding of the gallery and its head until 1996. Permanent Collection Highlights (2)

The gallery’s collections were formed along with a vibrant exhibitory activity, examination of contemporary fine art currents and the exploration of heritage. These collections currently comprise some 2,000 pieces and include: a collection of works by Slovene artists (founded in 1954), with emphasis on artists connected with the Koroška region, and an International Fine Art Collection (founded in 1966) including works and documentation donated by Pino Poggi (in 1998) which represents the core of the International Museum of Social Aesthetics. The most recent acquisitions include two comprehensive collections: a collection of works by Valentin Oman (donated in 2004) and a collection of works by Štefan Planinc (donated in 2005).
A special place in the collection has been dedicated to works of artists connected with the Koroška region and Slovenj Gradec, including sculptor Franc Berneker (1874–1932), an important figure for the development of modern sculpture in Slovenia, and painter Jože Tisnikar (1928–1998).
