The Princely House of Liechtenstein is one of Europe’s oldest families of noble lineage. A bearer of the name is first mentioned around 1136 as Hugo von Liechtenstein.
He called himself after Liechtenstein Castle, situated south of Vienna. The early Liechtenstein family had properties in the vicinity of the family castle and close to Lower Austria’s north-eastern border. The uninterrupted ancestry of the Liechtenstein family began with Heinrich I of Liechtenstein (died 1265/66), who obtained the lordship over Nikolsburg in South Moravia as freehold property.
The Princely Collections are made up of artworks originally purchased for the Baroque gallery in the Majoratshaus and to adorn the various palaces of the House of Liechtenstein. The presentation of the holdings at the LIECHTENSTEIN MUSEUM was designed to do justice to this aspect of the Collections’ history, and objects that were once seen and used together were thus to be reunited.

Library
The neoclassicist library was one of the jewels of the Liechtenstein Palace in Herrengasse. Between 1788 and 1792 the earlier Baroque building was rebuilt from the ground up under the direction of the princely architect Joseph Hardtmuth (1758–1816). It was considered the most important early-classical building in Vienna. The demolition of the palace began in 1912 and the priceless library furnishings were adapted for their contemporary location.
Gallery 04: The religious Art of Gothic and Renaissance Italy
This room offers an overview of the principal themes in Italian religious art from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The works of Italian painting from the early 14th century, such as those by the Sienese Naddo Ceccharelli or by Giovanni Baronzio, who worked in Rimini, are not to be found in any other Viennese museum.

The exhibition in the LIECHTENSTEIN MUSEUM in Vienna only comprises a selection of the Princely Collections’ highlights. In the galleries of the Garden Palace in the Rossau, 15 per cent of the objects from the depots are presented on an area of about 2,300 square metres.
In order to mobilize a regular audience and to address always new groups of visitors, special exhibitions focus on certain subjects suggested by the museum’s comprehensive holdings. Two exhibitions a year are presented both in the Garden Palace in Vienna and in the rooms of the Vaduz Museum of Art available to the Princely Collections.
In the winter season, further exhibitions presenting artworks from the PRIVATE ART COLLECTIONS’ holdings will round off what the permanent exhibition has to offer on the first floor of the Garden Palace.

PALAIS AND GARDEN
HISTORY
The Garden Palace in Vienna’s present-day Rossau district was constructed during the reign of Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein (1657-1712), who was one of the greatest builders of his day. He also oversaw the construction of castles and palaces in Feldsberg (Valtice), Eisgrub (Lednice), Aussee, Sternberg, Landskron, Prague, Plumenau (Plumlov), Butschowitz (Bucovice) and Kolodej.
THE REBIRTH OF A PRINCELY PALACE
The thorough renovation of the Garden Palace, begun in 2001 and by now largely completed, was conceived from the outset with the return of a significant portion of the Princely Collections from Vaduz in mind. With the opening of the LIECTHTENSTEIN MUSEUM on 28 March 2004, a long-held dream of the Princely Family became a reality.

Gallery guides
In order to avoid detracting from the historically-based hanging of the permanent collection a deliberate choice has been made to dispense with wall-mounted labels. However, each exhibit is numbered, the number referring to a brief description in the gallery guide available in each room.

Audio guides to the permanent exhibition (in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish or Japanese) or on the temporary exhibition (in German or English) are available for rent at fee of € 1,–
