The Musée d'Orsay is a national museum which opened to the public in December 1986 in order to show, in all its diversity, the artistic creation of the western world from 1848 to 1914.
The museum's nationally-owned collections originate from three main institutions: the Musée du Louvre, for works by artists born after 1820 or who emerged into the art world with the Second Republic (1848-1852); the Musée du Jeu de Paume, which had been dedicated since 1947 to Impressionism; and finally the Musée National d'Art Moderne, which, when it was installed in the Centre Georges Pompidou in 1976, had only conserved works by artists born after 1870.

Around 1900 : an Art Nouveau Ensemble. The Rispal Donation
In the 1960s, Antonin Rispal (1920-2003) played a decisive role in the rediscovery of Art Nouveau in France. This internationally known collector and art dealer died leaving an exceptional collection of objects and furniture. 250 of these pieces have just been generously donated to the museum by his wife and his daughter.
Among the most famous artists represented in this collection, are Carlo Bugatti, Emile Gallé, Louis Majorelle, and there is one of only two known sculptures by Alfons Mucha: La femme aux lys (Woman with Lilies). There are also some extremely rare pieces: a needlework table by Charles-Guillaume Diehl, a dressing table by Paul Auscher and an original plaster model of a fireback by Hector Guimard. Mme Josette Rispal has also offered personally a selection of objects and paintings relating to Sarah Bernhardt.

Disabled Visitors
Since its creation in 1986, the Musée d'Orsay has been committed to making its collections and services (bookshop, postcard shop, restaurant and café) accessible to all visitors.
Ramps and lifts provide access for visitors to the three main levels of the museum. Accessibility for disabled visitors is a constant concern, and recent improvements include new signposts, automatic doors and improved procedures to welcome disabled visitors. Special toilets are also available.

Family Visits and Activities
Devised for children aged 5 to 10 or 8 to 12 and their parents, different activities for families are organised in the museum, based on the permanent collections.
On certain Sundays, you may also attend screenings of animation films or musical shows specially devised for all the family. Children and adults are offerred a different approach to the museum, its collections and the period 1848-1914. These activities are conducted in French only.
