The Whitechapel Gallery opened in 1901 and has a 100-year history of presenting art and visual culture from Britain and abroad. It also revisited masters who had fallen into obscurity such as George Stubbs and J.W.Turner. It was the first public gallery to show some of the great names of British 20th Century Art, from Hockney to Gilbert & George, as well as profiling international artists such as Picasso, Pollock, Kahlo, Rauschenberg and Rothko for the first time. While being world class gallery with a global remit, the Whitechapel Gallery is firmly rooted in the architectural, social and intellectual heritage of east London.

The Work in Progress: Reclaim the Mural
Collective The Work in Progress investigate the history and legacy of murals in London in a major off-site project. They navigate the ownership of city space, the social function of art and local planning to develop a new mural in east London. See when the group met mural producers Brian Barnes, the Greenwich Mural Workshop and their reflections on iconic London mural sites online now.
Artists in Residence
Year long artist commissions in east London schools see Junto:Projects (Chloe Cooper, Phoebe Davies and Louisa Martin) working with Bridge Academy to make work responding to the daily activities and built environment of the school. While Shiraz Bayjoo and students at Bow Boys School create the BB Archive, an exploration of personal and collective history.

Duchamp and Sons
A survey of local shop names, artist groups and a history of avant-garde art led to the renaming of the Gallery’s youth group the Young Curators. The newly named Duchamp and Sons worked with artist Lady Lucy to shape their new identity and to develop the event The Naming Ceremony (see Talks). Just one of the many projects the group have undertaken with artists and curators, they regularly instigate discussions, public events and projects to explore art and ideas.
