| Today, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery enjoys a worldwide reputation as an outstanding center of modern art. Thomas Hoving, art historian and former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, recently said that "the Albright-Knox Art Gallery should be on everyone's list to see, for it's an overwhelming art experience. Small, intimate, and seductive, the museum has one of the most thumping modern and contemporary collections in the world." The Gallery's collection is especially rich in post-war American and European art, acquired mostly through the generosity of its patron, the late Seymour H. Knox, Jr. Abstract expressionism, pop art, and art of the 1970s through the end of the century are well represented by exceptional examples by artists such as Gorky, Pollock, Warhol, and Johns. In addition, the Gallery visitor will find that the permanent collection offers a panorama of art through the centuries. Surface Matter: Collage from the Collection
on view through February 11, 2007
While many artists have worked solely in the medium, collage has failed to rise to the popularity of drawing, painting, and sculpture. Surface Matter reveals nearly 100 years of collage and exemplifies how it infiltrated a century of art making and continues to relate to the artistic expressions of the twenty-first century. This exhibition will include works by artists such as Ronald Bladen, Charles Clough, Joseph Cornell, Jim Dine, Seymour Drumlevich, Jess, Joshua Neustein, Larry Rivers, Anne Ryan, Kurt Schwitters, and Leon Polk Smith.

FROM CANADA
Cross the Peace Bridge and after U.S. customs, follow roadway left. Turn right on Porter Avenue (second light). Take I-190 North (Niagara Falls) immediately on your right and continue on highway to Exit 11, Scajaquada Expressway, 198 East. The exit for the Gallery is marked ELMWOOD AVENUE, ART GALLERY. After exit, turn right and go to light. At light, turn left onto Elmwood Avenue. Continue to the first traffic light on Elmwood Avenue. You will see the Gallery on the left.
FROM THE EAST
Pay toll at Williamsville Toll Booth on the New York State Thruway, I-90, and continue westbound to an expressway marked 33 West (Buffalo). Go on 33 to Route 198 West. Continue on 198 West to ELMWOOD AVENUE SOUTH/ART GALLERY. At the end of the exit, turn right onto Elmwood Avenue, go to second stop light and turn left at the Gallery.
FROM THE BUFFALO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery offers an exquisite setting of art and architecture for a special, memorable event. Our buildings – one neoclassical, one modern – are the perfect location for a private party or corporate event, while the elegant, intimate spaces of muse and the Sculpture Garden are ideal for meetings and special events.
Facility rental fees are discounted 10% as a benefit of Gallery membership or not-for-profit status. All facility fees directly support the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and include admission fee, guided tour (docent or audio wands), parking, and security.

How do I get information about works of art in the Gallery's collection?
The Gallery's website provides images for most artworks in the permanent collection, which are accompanied by exhibition histories and publication listings.

Can I see a work of art that is not currently on view?
Please note that for security reasons, access to artworks is determined on a case-by-case basis and granted for research and scholarly purposes only. If you are planning on making a visit to the Gallery to view a particular work of art that is not on display, please call 716.270.8270.
Can I visit the Prints and Drawings Room?
The F. Paul Norton and Frederic P. Norton Family Prints and Drawings Study Center is open for classes and individual research during Gallery hours by appointment only. To make an appointment, please call 716.270.8270 or email jdipalma@albrightknox.org.

Matter at Hand is a museum-based program that serves 2,000 special needs visitors at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery each year. Founded on the philosophy that an art museum experience should be available to every individual, Matter at Hand is unique in its ability to provide enriching experiences that facilitate self-discovery and personal expression within one of the nation’s renowned museums of modern and contemporary art.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery offers art classes for students ages 4 through high school. Classes meet for six sessions and include painting, drawing, and sculpture. Students also learn about art in the Gallery, as many projects are inspired by works in the permanent collection. Taught by local artists and art educators, this program is designed to provide an array of creative art experiences both in the Gallery and in the art studio.
