Alte Pinakothek

The collections of the Alte Pinakothek date back to the collecting zeal shown by the dukes, electors and kings of Bavaria from the House of Wittelsbach. King Ludwig I., the last and most important of the Wittelsbach collectors, commissioned the building from architect Leo von Klenze. It was opened in 1836, and became an archetype of classical museum architecture. Considerably damaged during the Second World War, the gallery was rebuilt by Hans Döllgast in 1957. However, rather then merely reconstructing the missing parts of the walls, these areas were replaced with bare brickwork, in order for them to remain as visible "wounds".

The Alte Pinakothek houses one of the world´s most important collections. On display are more than 800 paintings, among them numerous well-known masterpieces of 14th to 18th Century European painting.

An exquisite collection of early Dutch painting including works by Rogier van der Weyden and Dieric Bouts can be found in close proximity to early German painting. This section includes Albrecht Dürer´s famous “Self Portrait” of 1500 and his “Four Apostles,” as well as masterpieces by Michael Pacher, Albert Altdorfer und Lucas Cranach. The scope and quality of Munich 's Flemish art collection, which includes works by Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordeans, makes it unique. The museums holdings also include the “Canigani Holy Family,” which was the first painting by Raphael to be brought to Germany . The Alte Pinakothek also boasts masterpieces by Titian and Tintoretto, Rembrandt and Frans Hals, Murillo and Velasquez, Chardin and Boucher.

The History of the Alte Pinakothek

1528/40
The basis for the current collection of the Alte Pinakothek is established: Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria (1493-1550) and his wife Jacobaea of Baden commission a series of history paintings for the Munich Residence. Numerous painters from key South German art centers participate: including Albrecht Altdorfer from Regensburg , Barthel Beham from Nuremberg , Jörg Breu and Hans Burkmair from Augsburg and from Munich Abraham Schöpfer, Hans Schöpfer and Ludwig Refinger. The subject matter of the works is taken from a range of events from Ancient Greek and Roman, as well as Hebrew and Early Christian history. The most well-know work of the series is Altdorfer's "The Battle of Issus".

1563-1567
Construction of the Kunstkammer (later the "Mint") by Wilhelm Egckl during the reign of Duke Albrecht V. Curiosities of nature as well as art objects are displayed. An inventory drawn up in 1598 lists, among other works, 778 paintings.

1597-1651
The Prince Elector Maximilian I (1573-1651) acquires major Old German paintings, including Albrect D...[ 阅读全部 ]

Art appreciation of the Pinakothek museums –
An active encounter with artworks

The department responsible for Visitor Services and Art Appreciation devises and organises guided theme tours, discussions on art, workshops and educational programmes designed to meet the interests of specific groups. In addition to these activities, we arrange museum tours for private groups and publish information.
The Pinakothek museums have their own special location for art appreciation: It is the Palais Pinakothek, which is situated at number 4 in the Türkenstraße. This 3-storey building has rooms for workshops, seminars and other venues open to adults, children, young people and groups from social institutions.

A museum remains vital only when it finds friends and patrons who feel personally allied to its goals and are prepared to commit themselves to the support of its collection. With a membership in the Pinakotheks-Verein you too can contribute to this goal. In view of the cuts in the state budget for museums, support through patrons is more important than ever before.

For patrons:
