| Museum Of Contemporary Art - Sydney
The Museum of Contemporary Art is Australia’s only museum dedicated to exhibiting, interpreting and collecting contemporary art from across Australia and around the world. With a continually changing program of exhibitions there’s always something new, exciting and inspiring to see at the MCA.
History Of the MCA:
The Museum of Contemporary Art was established to fulfil the museum aspect of the visionary bequest of Australian expatriate artist John Power (1881-1943), who left his personal fortune to the University of Sydney to inform and educate Australians in the contemporary visual arts.
In 1989 the building was gifted by the NSW State Government to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Funded by the University of Sydney and the Power Bequest, restoration and refurbishment of the building commenced in 1990 under the direction of Andrew Anderson of Peddle Thorpe/John Holland Interiors and in November 1991 the Museum of Contemporary Art officially opened.

The MCA has a number of collections and also holds work in trust for other organisations. The MCA draws on its collections for various exhibitions - most recently the popular Unpacked series. For more information on the MCA Collections see the Exhibitions section of the website.

In 2000, thanks to MCA Leading Sponsor Telstra, the MCA was able to remove admission charges to exhibitions. The MCA does charge entry to special exhibitions - usually one per year - although, with numerous exhibitions open simultaneously there is always a free exhibition to view.

The MCA is located on the Sydney Harbour foreshore at West Circular Quay.
Nestled between Sydney's busy Circular Quay ferry terminal and the historic Rocks precinct it is close to all forms of public transport: bus, train and ferry.

Car parking stations are within walking distance to the MCA, located at: Harrington St, The Rocks and Macquarie St (Sydney Opera House Car Park).

The MCA welcomes all visitors and affirms its commitment to making its programs and services accessible to everyone.
Access:
Street level access is located at 140 George Street, The Rocks. Visitors with restricted mobility can enjoy all public areas of the Museum, including galleries and function areas.
Accessible Parking:
Parking is available on George Street outside the Museum for vehicles approved to use designated public parking spaces.
Wheelchairs:
Can be borrowed at no charge from the Information and Cloaking desk situated in the Level 1 Circular Quay foyer.

What is contemporary art?
Contemporary art can be defined in several ways: art which is of this time; art which is recent, new or existing now; or art which follows modern ideas or fashions in style and design. It can also refer to museum collections from 1970s onwards.
How do I submit an exhibition proposal?
The MCA plans and develops its exhibitions program 18 months to 3 years in advance. As well as exhibitions developed by the Museum’s in-house curatorial team, we work with selected partner institutions in Australia and abroad, guest curators and artists, on collaborative and touring projects.
If you would like to submit an exhibition proposal to the MCA we require the following information:
• Covering letter marked attention to the Curatorial Assistant, Exhibitions Dept who will log and circulate your document
• Project outline, including description of artists/works and biographical information on the artist/s and curator
• Proposed dates and funding
• Other relevant information

The MCA is committed to making contemporary art accessible for a wide range of audiences. It offers a range of educational programs including major public lectures themed around MCA exhibitions, contemporary issues in the visual arts, design, architecture or film and practical and theoretical schools programs for primary, secondary and tertiary students.

The MCA runs free guided tours of exhibitions daily. Weekdays at 11am and 1pm and weekends at 12noon and 1.30pm.
