Although I have been living in London for more than a year, it is still a strange place to me. Many things that I encounter on a daily basis constantly caused me to think, “Why am I here?” I started to wonder what thoughts other foreigners had about living in such a new and different place. I do not think designers can communicate with people by only sitting at their desk, so I decided to meet these people and give them an opportunity to speak about their experiences.
I went to their personal places, stores, and even spoke with people on the street, asking them to write their personal feelings about living in London onto a sheet of Perspex.
The sheet represented an invisible and often intangible barrier that foreigners face living in a land different than their own. The work is more than just a record of these interactions; every person, conversation, and thought that is shared is the true essence of the piece. My hope is that the project will help create a sense of community among foreigners and also provide others a chance to understand someone different from themselves. This work will be continued while I live in London. |
