| Description: | This work presents the story of the victims of the Kwangju
pro-democracy movement which is one of the most important
pro-democracy movements in Korea. Today people seem to
be gradually forgetting this movement. People seem to have
only an abstract concept of this movement such as democracy,
a patriot, sacred ground, a commemorative ceremony, instead
of experiences of real life events such as a stab, a laceration, a
bruising, fracture, gunshot wound first hand. I wanted to show
these actual feelings of this movement through my work.
The movement was interpreted in various ways, but most
people consider it only as a political event. However, in May
1980, the people of Kwangju fought not for political reasons,
but for their lives. For them, their sons, daughters, husbands,
and wives were more important than some grand political
cause. I think that the nature of the movement lies in their
struggle to save the lives of their families rather than any
political causes. What do we know about the people who were
killed for no reason? We have forgotten what we shouldn’t
forget. This work is about the people who we have forgotten so
easily. In this book, there are vivid records of the people who
were killed at that time and testimonies of the victims’ families. |
