My latest project ‘1 in 250,000’ is about the sudden death of my brother 6 years ago from an aneurism caused by a rare genetic defect. The work is about the empty pain that will never go away and the memories that haunt my mum and me. Using images and text I tried to show the audience even just a small part of what this feeling is like. I try to use photography in a cinematic way to connect with the viewer because I feel that the most easily accessible and connective form of narrative is film.

Work of art I would like to make

I wish to continue along the themes I have started in ‘1 in 250,000’ but working with the moving image. I wish to create a piece of work that I suppose is sort of autobiographical. It would look at the idea of the place in your mind you go to when you are traumatized or in shock, the place you disappear into and loose the real world as a kind of protection, taking this idea but making it a real place that the protagonist goes to, like a silent empty forest, this place is at first there to help her deal with the pain but will slowly take her away from the real world and the place in her mind will grow as she returns there more and more, the work would be based around my own worries about mental health and loosing touch with real life. The visual aspects will take influences form films like ‘The Lovely Bones’, using the surreal to mask what are truly horrible parts of life, but also using fiction to tell a story that is still very true. The main idea will be about visualizing a space that is internal as this real place that you can be trapped in that things in the mind can seem just as real as reality.
