I observe and interoperate my personal interests and understandings of particular subcultures, how we choose to identify and portray ourselves as individuals. At the moment my focus is on looking at: punk and black metal music culture, freak/side show performances, tattoo, piercing and body modification, general body alteration and many famous icon’s that stem from these subcultures. I am an avid fan and follower of the tattoo culture in particular. To me, this is something that is greatly underestimated, and I like investigating the people, the processes, the inspirations, the why’s, how’s and where’s that are all included in this fascinating culture.

Work of art I would like to makeIt would be an exciting and honourable opportunity to be chosen as a New Sensation painter. I think there is still many exciting things to happen in painting and this drives me to constantly work and challenge myself, my ideas and my comfort zones as a painter. I would hope to make a very large scale painting (or paintings) exceeding my current challenges of 6 ft square canvases to 8/9 ft canvas. I am primarily a figurative painter, I love the details that are associated with the figure, the endless possibility of accessories we can use to define ourselves as a person and to be categorized within contemporary culture. I like the idea of making the underdog or misfit of society an icon. There is no better way to do this than painting a huge portrait of this social reject. Maybe in ways I wish to reform the identity of the socially unacceptable. Within my work, texture and gesture are very important to me, this is how I feel most comfortable with the paint so large scale work allows me to be challenged and learn as a painter. |
