Olivia Poppy Coles

Born in United Kingdom. Lives in: London
University of Brighton

I was born and raised in London. I studied art foundation (Art and Design) at Camberwell College of the Arts and completed a BA in Photography at Brighton University in 2012. My work deals with the reading of images and photography’s ability to construct and control those readings. After writing my dissertation on photography of Africa in the West I became fascinated with the idea of the ‘other’ and photography’s role in enforcing it. In my latest work ‘Portraits’ I explore the photograph as barrier and expose its ability to create a feeling of distance between subject and viewer.

Work of art I would like to make

My father's name is Henry W Amaddoo and he is an explorer.
He was born in South Africa and when he was young his father died in a car crash and then his mother died of a broken heart. He was brought up speaking Zulu, his closest friends were the servants in their house. His family had a big house on a lake outside of Johannesburg and he spent his childhood playing on their land. These are some of the things I know about my father.
My mother knew him for 20 years before they had me and he left two weeks after I was born. His life has always been a mystery to me and up until recently I did not care for his absence. Growing up I received gifts from all over the world and he wrote me letters describing his adventures .
He let go of any sort of family in order to live a life dedicated to being free.
All I know of him are the stories about the world he has experienced. He is a character that you read about but that never really exists. I will create a persona for him, an explorer. Illustrating through his letters, gifts, photographs and stories the man that I imagine him to be. My mother says he has never liked having his photo taken and that’s why there aren’t any. In this project I will create a character to fill his absence. He will not be photographed.
