Alan ChanBorn in Hong Kong. Lives in: London Slade School of Fine Art
My practice centres on treating the painting surface as container that is a playground of flatness and painterly language. In this maelstrom of postmodernity, I see myself as a sponge that soaks up and filters out influences from everyday experiences.
The painting of object is central to my practice. ‘Idea’ is betrayed by the shadow behind it and is given a status of being quasi-object. There is a struggle between stillness and movement that painted object inherited from birth.
My work speak as much about the fluidity of the structure of language itself as they are about the necessity of a concrete structure for anything to be comprehended.

Work of art I would like to make The work that I am going to make will primarily be paintings and drawings, exploring the structure of painting languages with respect to its cultural and historical roots.
The size of my work varies, from small paintings that can be held on hand to big paintings up to 2 meters tall. The size of the paintings command very different ways to respond to the surface. |
