My work explores tensions and slippages between pictorial and physical space. Using painting and printmaking I am fascinated on the one hand by their qualities of flatness, and on the other by their haptic, tactile potential. My subjects often relate to human appropriation and the body, and I try to allow a sense of touch and the hand to be present in the finished work. But whilst proximity and intimacy present themselves in the objects I depict, there is often an awkwardness or uncertainty to their materiality and form, in turn revealing the accompanying optical tensions of distance and illusion.

Work of art I would like to makeI am interested in the limits and historical weight of painting and at the same time how painterly language continues to morph and expand. If I am selected for New Sensations I will produce an interweaving work incorporating a sculptural wall-based object, a painting and a print that together explore the shifting frames and possibilities of painting and continue to develop upon the iconography of craft, the body, and the frame that has emerged in my work. |
