Clara StarckBorn in Denmark. Lives in: London Goldsmiths University
I am a Danish artist living in London working in a variety of medium , within sculpture, drawing and photography.
For the last six years, I have been exhibiting in Copenhagen, Odense and London while completing a combined BA Fine Art at the Funen Art Academy and Goldsmiths College, University of London.
My interest lie in the differences between expanding and contracting infrastructure
and industrial development, its relation and influence on the urban citizens.
By a certain amount absurdity in my work -as in its un-productibility- I am
trying to question by pointing to an urge in our living for rationality and time
concerned effective productivity
My work is concerned with the tensions generated in the contradictions between
a constant drive towards generalisation and rigid classification and an evident
variety in perceptions of value and subjective experience.

Work of art I would like to makeThe piece working title is 'Ice Cream and Movie With Ice Cream and Movie'
I have been working with the concept and interest, of exploring a kind of excess
spillage in the modern society. Detecting the difference of excess from rural and
urban life. Exploring with a strangers eyes the system of human living, mainly in Western society.
I have been exploring this in my practice. Through my fictive character
Dr. Stanzley, who explores urban living as an anthropologist, he
observes as a stranger, the contemporary living. We do not know what
sort of society or structure Dr. Stanzley originates from. We are just aware that
he has not seen the life we are familiar with.
As Dr. Stanzley also suggests, my interest, in portraying a potential
underworld of excess from the modern living. A type of after mass from what
appears on the surface, but then is left behind.
In my reason installation Ice Cream and Movie I concentrate on the left overs and
developments change of the production method.
It is part of an expanded investigation into the differences between expanding
and contracting infrastructure and industrial development and its relation to
the urban citizens.
I wish to take this further with, Ice Cream and Movie With Ice Cream and Movie as an expansion of Ice Cream
and Movie, that was a fragment of an ”excess underworld” showing the excess
of urban living. It is a part of my ongoing exploration into the hyper-complex
society, in which my work suggests different ways to understand 20th and 21st
century urbanisms, and alter our perception of the urban everyday. I seek to
question the influence of systematization and categorization that has become
more the whole, than a part of the contemporary communication.
I will depict this in ICE CREAM AND MOVIE WITH ICE CREAM AND MOVIE, an imaginable idea of leftovers and excess, such as valuables, trash and knowledge that was abandoned.
This piece relates to other projects in my practice, such as mentioned Dr.
Stanzley, Anthropological Investigations and newly created sculptural piece
LeftOvers -Anthropological Investigations can be viewed online at my webpage, www.CLARASTARCK.com.
And Ice Cream and Movie on show at Goldsmiths degree show this June.
I strive to view these issues from a more visual and emotionally engaged stance,
which I hope provides a new rhythm in combination with theoretical aspects.
