There is fluidity in my painting as things in front are actually behind and things in behind actually before. The object is spaciously moving back and forth but in some parts, the layer and the depth are not animated when the performative elements, such as thick, impacted brushstrokes, use of fluorescent spray paints and enormous amounts of drizzles, coincide with this fluidity, linking the hierarchy in my painting. The pace of space speeds up right until spacious togetherness comes up and slows down to maintain the balance between autonomy and sense of self in paint.

Work of art I would like to makeRecently, I am collecting references from Korean-pop music especially idol singers' ambitious lyrics and titles of the songs such as NUABO, Bubble Pop and Ring Ding Dong etc. To give an example, the song NUABO is meaning "New Blood Type": A, B and O are blood types and it sounds like "ye-bbi-oh". This way of pronouncing the title is unusual in that it is socially distinguishes the fans from the general public and creates a strong solidarity among fans. The title is supposed to ambitiously represent the fact this idol group is insisting that they are the "new blood" to the music industry. I am intrigued by the fact the enigmatic and metaphorical title become very abstract and would like to produce a series of “Korean-pop paintings.” One of my recent paintings in the Goldsmiths MFA Show, "NUABO" was a starting point of this series. |
