My artwork explores the human face; it challenges the public’s perception of beauty, aesthetics and truth in modern society and attempts to reinvent social conventions surrounding appearance. The overriding objective of my art practice is therefore to discover how aesthetics and morality influence one another in the art world and in the media, eventually determining the role in which context plays between the two. In doing so I hope to establish how society influences a person’s whole character merely by judging their exterior qualities.

Work of art I would like to make

“Portraiture is about showing us ourselves” – anon

Portraiture has multiple functions. It has functioned politically and personally for centuries; making huge impacts on the world. It aims to inform of past communities and to celebrate our icons and remarkable individuals in society; it can express a person’s identity or commemorate the dead. My own practice attempts push the boundaries of portraiture because it doesn’t just deal with heroes, kings, queens and the famous, it goes beyond those celebrated in society and looks to those outcast or immoral. In immortalizing the immoral I am challenging some of the original purposes of portraiture, which mainly aims to celebrate esteemed members of society.
In 1971-72 Gerhard Richter celebrated our society and its achievements by creating a series of 48 portraits of people that influenced the growth of society, from scientists to philosophers. The thing which made Richter's display so powerful was the unity of his portraiture, one alone would not create such a powerful metaphor. If I were to have more time and funding I too would like to create a larger and more consistent set of portraits, which could convey my subject matter with intimidating force. If chosen as a New Sensation I want to create a series of paintings that display those who were perceived to impact on society in a negative way. I do not see why portraiture need merely be a celebration of our societies figures as our society was not created by the actions of the moral alone. Through detailed research into the actions and physicality of immoral figures I aim to establish all the ways in which our society was judged and built.
