My practice addresses the fascination I have with the combination of photographic imagery and sculpture. I began experimenting with printing onto various materials to see how it would change the perception of an image, presenting numerous connotations and narratives. The origin or utilitarian reference point is not what is important; it is the material itself and its possibility as a vehicle for the photographic image, creating a new physical context for the image. I am primarily interested in the hierarchies of display and the incorporation of diverse material creating a specific environment for the viewer, presenting them with unexpected combinations. Creating scenarios and depicting specific scenes deliberately with the tactility of the object, looking at the resonance of both material and image and how to use this imagery to echo visual dialogue.

Work of art I would like to make

I will be questioning object identity and representation. Exploring objects and mediums in order to intervene in image-making looking at the resonance of both material and image and how to use this imagery to echo visual dialogue. Asking questions such as is an object’s identity decided by the image? How does the physicality of the support inform the perception of the image? I am keen to further explore creative processes, utilising various approaches and mediums, together with an installational context in which the spaces available through this competition would enable me to do.

Photography is also an area that I am engaged with. Using various locations I take images that sometimes have an ambiguity of place or ‘event’. Utilising these images to create a given scenario, also employing an additional medium to transfer the image onto, and to reinforce a specific quality. This attempts to create a notion of ‘photographic sculpture’ with its possibilities of a transitional approach to activating a set of spatial elements. Through such activity I shall be exploring ideas of sculpture, image and setting. Using the inherent qualities of the materials to not only exploit colour and texture, but to offer additional layers of meaning conjured up with the visual narrative
