Steaven David

Born in France. Lives in: London
Central saint martins

My studio practice investigates the place and role of mass media images, with certain aspect of my work focusing on celebrity culture. Producing very refined and realistic portraits of celebrities, slightly altering the reality, I question what role they play in the society and how and to what extent they are being played by the media. For my degree show, I produced screenprints challenging the notion of images and surfaces. I superimpose idealized images of Los Angeles with short texts depicting a darker reality than the one generally taken for granted. Moreover, by mixing true and false stories, I intend to blur the boundaries with reality and fiction and push the viewer to reconsider those issues. I have completed my BA of fine arts at Central Saint Martins. I am currently navigating between France, Los Angeles and London, working to prepare a Master next year.

Work of art I would like to make

I have been experiencing with film for a few years now and would like to accomplish a more ambitious project in this medium. I would like to continue to expand my investigation around the idea of the image and the simulacra, especially in a city like Los Angeles where this concept is fully realized.
I want to experiment how film and cinema in general contributes to create aspects of the reality we live in, how the artificially produced image navigates between real and fiction and what effects it has on the viewer.
I want to communicate with an audience as large as possible and that does not need to have a theoretical background to appreciate the work.
