I am interested in the layering of imagery: sometimes this is the layering of ideas through repetition or juxtaposition, often it is literally – through collage or projecting imagery over pre-existing forms. I like distorting images using the reflection and refraction of light to unusual and possibly abstract effect. In a way, I consider the beam of light sculptural material in its own right, as it has a presence within a space that can be disrupted or even bent to the need of the artist. Using projection gives me the opportunity to play with a moving image – bring it into the realm of 3-dimensions. It has been the case in my work, that although the subject matter of the work may change, the use of ‘sculptural projection’ is how it becomes realised.

Work of art I would like to makeI am looking into envisioning new guises for buildings, projecting the eddying currents of water or branches up onto them, using the enlarged and abstracting quality of the projection. Architecture and the spaces we create reflect fundamental natural truths, such as geometrical principles that can be found in the structural makeup from everything from molecules to forests. What we often don't think about is the temporality of things around us, particularly the larger structures whose duration is greater than ours, such as riverbeds or mighty trees. This also extends to our buildings. We should consider these structures as being as temporal as those existing organically. Bricks and mortar crack, cement crumbles, plaster melts away; and through these processes a new form is created, either via our appropriation of materials, reviving and re-imagining old buildings; or else nature reclaims the space opening it up to a new life altogether. I want to study and film some of the oldest natural areas in London, and using this footage create work for an interactive performance piece where these images could be projected up onto some of our urban spaces. Recently both Tate tanks and London Pleasure Gardens have opened as possible venues for large-scale projection/performance work. The docklands near the Pleasure gardens in particular I think would be a great location to present this kind of work. |
