Sounds Outstanding- Soviet Gaiety and Musical Responses

An evening of music inspired by the Saatchi Gallery's current exhibition:
GAIETY IS THE MOST OUTSTANDING FEATURE OF THE SOVIET UNION

The Saatchi Gallery is pleased to host an evening of music inspired by and in celebration of the current exhibition Gaiety Is The Most Outstanding Feature Of The Soviet Union: New Art From Russia, and is set to reflect and extend the Gallery's innovative role in the presentation of contemporary culture.

The concert features new compositions created by emerging young talent from the internationally renowned Purcell School of Music and Queenswood School in Hertfordshire, and will be performed by students and professional musicians from the Philharmonia Orchestra and specialist cross-arts collaboration ensemble Music Off Canvas. The concert concludes with Shostakovich's intensely powerful Chamber Symphony, op. 110a; one of Soviet Russia's greatest compositions.

The Purcell School is one of the UK's leading specialist music schools and was awarded the UNESCO Mozart Gold Medal for its unique contribution to music, education and international culture. Alumni include some of the world's leading professional musicians. Queenswood School is progressive boarding and day girls' school offering an all-round education including a high level in music and the fine arts.

British conductor James Ross will be directing the event. James Ross has conducted over 850 works in fifteen countries, ranging from a core symphonic and choral repertoire to contemporary music by Boulez, Ligeti, Stockhausen and many first performances.

The composers from the Purcell School have written pieces for Music Off Canvas, which is supported by the Musicians Benevloent Fund's 'Emerging Excellence Award'.

The Saatchi Gallery offers a vivid musical experience surrounded by the art that Dimitri Ozerkov describes as, 'Multifocal and transcendent, poetic and hypoctrical, politicized and romantic'.
