Jeremy Maxwell
) | Born 1950. After a successful career as a psychotherapist I switched to professional photography in 2005, in order to fulfill a lifetime ambition. |
About the Artist
I make photographs for my own satisfaction, and was somewhat surprised upon discovering that others enjoyed owning them.
In the past my professional photography has been done to meet the expectations of others. For example I've photographed a lot of cars, and people handing a cheque to the chair of a charity. This is good training for an artist it helps to hone camera skill, but it's hardly inspiring work.
I have two exhibitions planned for 2009, a local one in my home town and a larger one at Netsel Marina, which is an important venue in Turkey.

Damla's Smile Shines Through The Lines!
2008 |
) |
| This image was made at the request of the sitter who wanted a picture that showed all her 'lines'.
Not only does it show the lines but the original file was treated so as to amplify them. This would be unnecessarily cruel had I not been confident that Damla's smile would put any of her blemishes into the background.
Taner's Troubles
2006 |
) |
| No matter what troubles seemed to befall Taner he always seemed jovial.
In 2006 he was forced by financial worries to give up his businesses in the town where I live.
The image depicts this shadowy threat looming over him, yet his spirit continues to radiate optimism.
Nurgul By Neon
2008 |
) |
| Whilst Nurgul is extremely photogenic the setting for this elegant portrait is unlikely. It is a worker's snack bar. The sole lighting is provided by neon strip light, yet I might have done worse had I photographed her in a studio.
In the background two large gas bottles are blurred into a mysterious backdrop, and a tea towel left by the waiter has become an exotic throw in this unusual image.
Fatih By Candlelight
2008 |
) |
| I love to push the boundaries when taking images of people. In this case the sitter is illuminated by a single candle. The night is pitchy dark and the mains power has failed.
The strange highlight in the eyes is the reflection of the candle flame as it flutters in the wind.
There is something piratical about this image, which also somewhat summarizes Fatih.
Ali And His Drum
2008 |
) |
| Ali is a remarkable man who has spent his life working the land. This image was taken of him during a full moon at an informal moot.
The setting is an ancient Christian hermitage, long abandoned, in Cappadocia a volcanic region of Turkey.
The Moon And The Faces
2008 |
) |
| This amazing image is of Ortahisar, a huge mount of magma that for years provided cave dwellings for families. Finally abandoned in 1956 because of concerns about it's integrity, as the caves were mined to provide extra space, plans are now apparently afoot to reinhabit it.
The picture was taken from the roof of a villager's house on the night before a full moon.
Marmaris Evening Light
2005 |
) |
| This image was made from a scanned colour negative. It has been cropped slightly and gently massaged with digital brushes.
The result is a classic image of Turkish Gullets and British Yachts at their harbour moorings for the evening.
2006 |
) |
| This image was made from a scanned colour negative. It was very choppy on the Bosporus on the day this shot was taken.
It must have appeared far more so in the wake of the steamer from which I took this shot.
For some reason this fisherman has separated himself from the fleet. I like that, it has given the image something of the appeal of 'The Old Man And The Sea'.
But this isn't a true seascape, for in the background you can see the Topkapi, the home and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman Sultans and their concubines. |
Education and biography
Most of my qualifications aren't relevant to photography, except that being a psychotherapist helps me to see into the being of others.
I studied photography formally for a year in England, and also worked briefly as an assistant to an advertising photographer.
Mostly though I am self-taught. Future shows
