For my sense of place project I chose to focus on Iceland. I visited Iceland in April 2012 with school. Iceland is a country full of diversity. There are the waterfalls, the rivers, the glaciers and the volcanoes. The scenery was vast and untouched by man. A big focus for the Icelandic people is environmentally friendly energy. Because of this I chose to look at eco friendly materials. Over time I developed the idea of eco-fashion. I looked at an eco-fashion show in Canada for inspiration and decided to design a dress.
The dress would have the theme of water as most of Iceland consists of ice, rivers and waterfalls. The skirt was made of strips of material bought from charity shops and so kept to the theme of eco-fashion. However some material had to be bought from a fabric shop. I chose mainly sheer material to give the effect of water and allow the different colours and textures to merge. The shiny look of some of the materials reflected the light and added texture to the dress, but mostly gave the effect of water. The skirt was shape to be approximately 30inches at the back and then was shaped round to be approximately 19inches at the front, centre part. The sides were shaped to gradually rise to the front.
For the top of the dress I created a collage of photographs which I took in Iceland. I then printed these off. Three versions were printed in different colours. These were cut up and then sewn together in a joiner print style. I like the style of David Hockney as I think it brings a new life to photography. To add to the photographs crayons were stuck around the top, front edge of the top. These were then melted using a hairdryer. I faced some problems when it came to sticking the crayons on however I overcame this by using more glue and allowing the glue to dry longer. Along the top, back edge I used left over Icelandic króna and beads which were removed from one item of clothing used for the skirt. I think the krónas add to the lnk to Iceland as they are unique to the country. I liked the effect of the glitter in the crayons which ran down the top as I feel it adds texture to the photographs.
I enjoy photography very much and so chose that to feature heavily in my final piece. I looked at artists such as David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama and Giulia Agostini. I especially liked Giulia Agostini’s as I liked how she placed the models and used empty space to create a certain emotion.
