The Serendipity of Design

The Serendipity of Design
Photo Description:
‘The Serendipity of Design’ By Xuanqi Ji, from Queen Anne’s School, Caversham. A Level Materials: Mixed media The in my contextual research and personal extended study I investigated the theme of cross-cultural influences in design, in particular the influences of one culture on another in textile design. During the preparatory period for the examination, my attention was drawn to a bird nesting in an old letterbox. I noticed with interest how this tiny creature had woven a completely disparate selection of all kinds of materials and colours taken from both the natural and unnatural worlds around it. I saw this as a potentially beautiful and poetic metaphor for the world of textiles, developing my visual ideas, paring them down to base the final work on the slit of the letterbox and what I could see of the bird’s creation, as the starting point for invention.
