‘Cliché Verre’ or Glass Pictures were traditionally used by artists such as Camille-Corot and Daubigny in the 18th century. They are quite possibly the most experimental and abstract products of the impressionist movement, as the process can radically change the piece from how the artist had intended for their work to look. By contrasting this with contemporary abstract artists such as John Virtue, who works in large scale, black and white landscapes, I conceived of combining the surprisingly abstract technique of Cliché Verre with the intentionally abstract mark making of Virtue. In the result, we essentially encounter an image, which due to a series of translations of mediums, is something far from the image of a waterfall on which it was based. |
