This piece was developed from researching local myths and legends from Jersey where i live. The myth is about a bride who was jilted on her wedding day and who then tragically commited suicide. Her spirit is said to wander the Waterworks Valley in St Lawrence, a parish in Jersey. I dressed a full skeleton in the biology lab in a wedding dress with garlands of flowers. I then lit it from behind to accentuate the ribs and pelvis. The materials of the piece arose from experimenting with monoprinting and wax, where the hot dripped wax over an oil paint monoprint lifts the drawing marks which i then lit from behind. I was influenced by the Mexican day of the dead imagery and Paula Rego's sense of narrative. |
