Painted from photographs that I took of close ups of object in juxtaposition. I took inspiration from the Dutch Vanitas artists in particular, trying to create the effect achieved by photorealism. Unlike the Vanitas paintings, which always had an arrangement of objects, often symbolic, enclosed in a dark space, my paintings focus on cut offs implying that there is a world outside of the painting. I take the aesthetic of the objects, something that is more often used for documentation, and turn it into art. |
