This piece makes a light hearted comparison between consumerism and religion through the context of the housewife. The piece explores consumerism and the ideas of self improvement and satisfaction which is embodied in religion. It compares religion with modern middle class fads such as Zumba, a daily ritual that is an example of this act of self satisfaction. I chose Delia Smith as I felt she has this goddess image which is contrasted by the anti christ of domestic ideology Dr Oetker. Like the embodyment of the devil in the serpent in Adam and Eve, the temptation of the blasphemous cooking aids and ready made meals Dr Oetker supplies again embodies the volatility and seduction of the devil which has caused such fear and misogyny within the patriarchal past. Delia Smith embodies the ideal house wife and so the black lines which efface sexuality, remove her voice and shackle her legs represent the oppresion of women which links back to the image of Eve. Acrylic on Canvas (6ft by 4ft). |
