The composition of a painting is of outmost importance. From the portraits by John Mortimer to the portraits by Hockney, the position of each sitter plants a single seed of thought into the minds of any audience. This painting of two people in seemingly unrelated positions, both gazing into different directions, immediately encourages the viewer’s imagination and thought, and in doing so successfully grabs attention from the very first glance.
Its large scale along with the black of the stained canvas gives this painting a great sense of power - the same power that we see in the charred sculptures of David Nash and the great paintings by Mark Rothko. It is able to draw you in and pull you from the comfort of the gallery or classroom and into a dark unknown place where your thoughts are free to wonder as they please.
