This piece explores the story of my great grandmother and her family, particularly her sister Ellen and their experience of the Russian revolution leading to their escape to England from St Petersburg. The difference between the sisters' experiences of the revolution are shown in the chair, which is covered in embroidered diagrams. The dressing table focuses mostly on Ellen and her five husbands. I have made a series of silver rings to represent each husband and Ellen's attitude to them. In this project I really enjoyed working with the idea of research, discovery and recognizing gaps in my knowledge of this family. I have tried to convey this to viewers by making them discover and explore my work with diagrams symbols and notes. I have cut the faces out of all the photographs, to show that I don't know what these people looked like, just snippets of there story. There are a lot more layers and detail in the work itself - this is just an overview. |
