Through using a neo-impressionist style of pointillism, tiny dots of color work together to create rich and vibrant imagery. I rely solely on the energy and emotion of primary colors to dance and whirl in the form of dots on the canvas. All photography is pointillist, since surfaces of pictures are formed and colored through millions of pixels, producing striking images. Enlarging the pixels in the image has enhanced this reality, so that the viewer is unaware that these pushpins form an image up close. I am most interested in three different aspects of the viewer’s experience. The first aspect is the initial engagement of the work from a distance. The second aspect would be once the viewer move in to see the dissolution of the image into patterns. The third aspect is when the viewer realizes, upon closer examination, that the image contains roughly tens of thousands of push pins-15,500 to be exact. I became inspired to use pushpins as a material through examining the complexity of simple objects interactions in space. The subject matter of this piece examines city pride and cultural identity. City pride is often represented through the iconic 59 fifty baseball hats, and this photo is one of a series that feature different city area codes embellished onto baseball hats.
