Jam Cannon

Jam Cannon
Photo Description:
This piece connects to the bean jar piece. I like the fact that over time the alliances alter like you see also in my work of the beans. As they grow from vulnerable beans they gain strength and take over. I want to take my original piece of the beans and revert them back to be vulnerable by adding another element. Within my bean piece I like the combination and alliances that were altering and changing before my eyes. As a final response based on my own ideas I decided to take this work and expand it to alter it again. When I bought the jam jars they obviously had jam inside. I centred my final response on the fact that I wanted to use the jam as it formed an already obvious alliance to the jar. The combinations and additions of new materials and objects change and alter and are able to completely turn the meaning on its head. For example strength becomes weak, gentle becomes harsh, and soft becomes hard. Within this new piece I turned a piece of wood at a carpenter to make cannon. I really would have liked to buy one but I tried and failed. I took the jam and boiled it up adding extra sugar to create cannon balls made from jam. I find the work quite humorous in the fact that the jam is getting its own back. I see connections in my other work of the fish net in the sense there is a narrative happening. The soft sweet jam I have heated up and it has changed into bitter, hard and an inedible substance. It has turned from being harmless if thrown to be hard as rock and could do some damage if thrown. I have aimed the cannon at the jars containing the beans. The jars have been recycled from containing the jam and keeping the jam fresh to protecting the growth of the bean plant. I feel a sense of jealousy within this work because the jam cannon balls look like they could be fired toward the jars and destroying them. The most interesting thing is that the beans would probably survive and grow into the earth and form a new alliance as they already look like they are ready to leave the jars and go out on their own. It reminds me of a snail finding a new home because its shell is now too small for it. The mood of the work has so many contradictions which I guess is a reflection of life. You can see vulnerability in the jars but they are protecting the bean plants if they were to stand alone in a different context. The jam has changed from soft to hard. The plants actually look to be strong in the jars but look a little fragile against the jam. The jam also looks vulnerable in the sense that it does feel and look brittle. If it is to be fired it will break and chip away as it falls and hits the ground. The alteration and changes that have occurred have set up a scenario and new interpretation of the differing materials. Alliances and bonds are being forced together between manmade and natural items.
