Garden Table

Garden Table
Photo Description:
This sculpture is linking back to my enquiry and how the combination of manmade and natural objects and items can alter a subject meaning. This is a table that I have made by combining and using found old materials to create a new identity. I have taken a bed spring mattress and altered it to be a potted plant table, whereby the springs can house the plants. The bed sits on a wooden frame and the legs are made form found old tools that have been discarded. The tools are garden tools and in a way this piece is showing how the inside is combining with the outside but in a functional way. A redundant bed whose purpose is to protect and keep comfortable is outside, decayed and unusable but turned into an area to protect nature in the outside world. The tools not wanted are now supporting life and allowing nature to grow in a safe and sturdy environment. Functions and combinations have altered the subject meaning like in the work of Mona Haltom. The mood of the table is heavy and sturdy and looks interesting in the way that the items are decayed and rusted over time. It has a comical sense about it like the cannon and jam scenario in my Hatoum final response. The legs of the table look like they have a life of their own and they could run off at any point incorporating an energetic element within the work which is contradicting the decayed feel to the work.
