Photo Description:
Sandbags are protective and the military have used them for years to absorb shock and projectiles. Sand spreads the energy of the bullets. Not only do soldiers hide behind them but buildings are protected behind them to protect them from the shock waves of bombs. The grass I find the most interesting aspect because it alters the subject meaning of the piece. The grass is fresh and does not look like it has been war torn or that it has been in a dirty environment. Its freshness looks hopeful and vibrant. The work contains contradictions in a different way that Tom Friedman uses them but they have this in similar. The harsh and heaviness of the bags are softened by the grass which is enlightening and non threatening. The grass gives the impression that the bags are being protected by an outer covering. They look more inviting. I think it odd to think that something that protects is being protected or is it being attacked by nature? Is the grass actually taking over the sand bags? This is more fascinating as something as strong as a bullet cannot win against the sandbag but something as delicate as a blade of grass can. Nature is highlighted here as extremely powerful as it can combine and form an alliance with most things.
