Jumping Doll

My starting point was memories from my childhood, in particular stories. I researched Enid Blyton and found many of her stories had sinister and sometimes racist undertones. This led me to investigate other familiar tales from my childhood such as nursery rhymes. Again, I found many of these had double meanings and had evolved from urban stories, for example, “ring a ring a roses” is a song about the plague. As a teenager I have heard and read many urban myths. I decided to write a contemporary nursery rhyme based on an urban myth. “Jumping Doll” is about a girl that has created an imaginary friend who encourages her to jump out the window. Being inspired by Paula Rego’s paintings, like her, at first glance the image appears innocent but then with closer inspection there are sinister undertones. This image is the illustration for my nursery rhyme. Soft pink symbolise the innocence of the young girl’s childhood. The girl playing with the doll is in a Kara Walker style silhouette. Within this I’ve illustrated her nursing the doll on her knee, with her imaginary friends train in the background. However he is now where to be seen. |
