For my AS Photography Unit 2 project, I decided to explore the theme of ‘Encounters, Experiences and Meetings’, through still life photography and capturing objects that are associated with Tea parties. For my final piece, I produced nine images relating to the project theme. Each photograph captures part of a tea party, and all together they create the setting for a tea party experience. The cakes and tea sets are essential for showing the stereotypical atmosphere of a tea party, and the square format of the composition represents the dining table that would be used in it.
I used shallow depth of field to focus on the handles of the tea sets and cakes, to demonstrate how people would view the table scene; the parts focused are where people would visually focus on when attempting to hold the object. The objects are closely shot, and this creates a sense of closeness with it. I purposefully did this to welcome the viewers' to the tea party showing that everyone is welcome.
I decreased colour saturation to produce an antique mood because the designs of the tea sets are for the adults. The antiquity also captures the traditional aspects of the tea party experience. Although the whole atmosphere appears calm in each photograph, the cupcakes still remain colourful and playful. I chose to do this to show that the scene is welcoming everyone, including children.
Underneath the nine photographs, I created a collage strip in the style of my sketchbook presentation. This collage shows the process of my ideas; almost like a visual mind map. I created this with scraps of paper, fabric, canvas, and photographs of my sketchbook taken with colour film. These materials give a vintage mood which match perfectly with my final prints.
The colour saturation in the final images were inspired by Paolo Roversi to make them look more like paintings, Sarah Moon for ambiguous and undefined depiction, Lynsie Roberts for the layering and dreamy style of cupcakes, and at last Irving Penn for still life images. The combinations of these inspirations generate motion: giving the appearance that there are many things going on.
