The piece is initially perceived as a consoling embrace when it is in fact a gesture resembling forced breast feeding. There is an underlying message of colonial rape of indigenous people where invaders have tried to 'civilize' people by stifling their customs and freedom as well as themes of age, decay and cosmetics. I was partly inspired by my work in an old home, where I observed the fragile arthritic and interpreted it as a predatory clutch. |
