This piece of my artwork was designed to look like an African Tribal Mask. The mask itself symbolises the tribes ancestors and when worn it supposedly brings up the spirits. The design on the mask was inspired by looking at tribe members faces. I looked at certain features and the tattoos the tribe members have on their face. I then combined some of the features and tattoos and built them up onto the clay face. The mask would be worn on a celebratory day that is special to the tribe. The tribe members would sing and dance in the mask to contact and communicate with their deceased relatives. The prints behind the mask are poly prints. I designed the patterns by looking at traditional African prints then putting all the aspects together and designing one final print. The colours used are earthy, natural colours and are a fairly dark tone. However on the paper i printed on i used a variety of dark and light colours so that it would stand out. I decided to use darker colours because of what the mask represents so the piece as a whole would look aesthetically pleasing and all tie together. |
